Frequently Asked Questions
Basic information on engaging in therapy
Confidentiality
Confidentiality is the basis of any psychotherapeutic relationship. It is a foundation for building trust and rapport with each other. Even the fact that you are in psychotherapy is confidential. There are legal mandates of when a psychotherapist must break confidentiality that are ultimately centered around your safety (if you are harming yourself or someone else, or in the case of child or older adult abuse). I would be happy to discuss any of your concerns around confidentiality with you.
How long does therapy take?
This is a question that makes many people feel uneasy about embarking in a therapy relationship. This is an important question, as therapy involves significant energy, time and money. The number of sessions is dependent on many factors such as: what you are looking for, how you define improvement and success, the types of issues you want to address, and how ready and motivated you are to do the work with me. Some people are so motivated they want to come in more than once a week, others once a month. The frequency of our meetings will influence the amount of time you are in care.
Fees and Insurance
Fees are payable at the time treatment is rendered.
If your insurance allows you to choose an out of network provider, I can provide you with a bill which you can personally submit to your insurance for reimbursement of the psychotherapy if you choose. It is your responsibility to know the limits of your insurance coverage. My belief in the importance of protecting my client’s confidentiality is one of the reasons that I do not contract with any health insurance companies to provide care. Insurance companies also require diagnoses, which may or may not be appropriate for your situation.
You are responsible for payment of missed or late cancellations of appointments. Sessions are 50 minutes for individuals. Families and groups may be longer, and time frame will be negotiated when you engage in treatment.
